Our area certificate allows doctoral students to pursue interdisciplinary work in medieval studies and to develop the basic skills required to do advanced research. You must complete nine courses, including four in the department you are enrolled in for an advanced degree and five in other departments.

Language requirement
You must demonstrate advanced proficiency in one of the following languages: Classical Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Medieval Arabic, Medieval Japanese, Old English, Old French, Old Norse, Old Occitan, or Persian. Advanced proficiency can be established by presenting for credit two advanced courses in philology or literary studies of the language in question, or by appropriate advanced examination.
